TurboTax Answers is a design response to the company’s aging and clunky online support space — a missed opportunity to deeper engage and eventually enroll millions of unconverted users. The target was to design a mobile-forward web experience providing visitors with the most powerful tax and product support tool available.

The Chicago Bulls' Basketball franchise’s Box Suite promo branding at United Center in Chicago, IL

Based in Marin County, California, Zenni offers both trendy and affordable eyewear for men, women, and children. With over 33 million frames sold worldwide, a pair of Zennis is owned in every country across the globe. Zenni is proud to be the Official Eyewear Partner of the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Bulls and San Francisco 49ers.

As an Art Director, I directed and designed materials to promote Zenni Eyewear in a private Box Suite viewing room at the Bulls’ stadium, United Center.

BRILLIANT EARTH

Ethically-sourced diamond and gem fine jewelry retailer in San Francisco, CA.

As their sole in-house graphic and ux/ui designer—a role more akin to that of a company’s Creative Director—I was entrusted with developing and managing the visual identity of Brilliant Earth, and advancing design standards throughout their digital presence.

Within the first six months, my concepts and methods strengthened the brand and enhancing the user experience. My visual strategies (put through rigorous a/b testing) were consistently on trend, exciting and bold, and focused on the company’s growth and competitiveness within the market.

BILLIE EILISH CALENDAR

Billie Eilish is an American singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA.

Brown Trout Publishers—the leading manufacturer of calendars, daily planners, and journals—hired me to design a 2021 wall calendar for their client Billie Eilish.

Icon specializes in updating cult classic Sport Utility Vehicles (60s/70s Toyota Land Cruisers and Ford Broncos) with modern features and amenities. While their product is meticulously designed, their website still had that pre-responsive clunkiness—a style whose death gave way to an era of lavish minimalism and breathing space with the adoption of vertical scrolling.

My revamp demonstrated how an interactive marketing tool like a website can not only be highly functional, but unfold before you luxuriously like a beautifully designed coffee table book or brochure.

I served as Creative Director of the company rebrand and website rebuild—taking new brand identity guidelines and bringing them to life. This project included developing and building an entirely new website, and consistent, on-brand designs and branding collateral for all of Kyo's marketing channels. I created icons, illustrations, and computer graphics as part of this build. The rebrand and site has been extremely well-received by the leadership team, clients, and staff alike.

MUSIC VIDEO

Having produced a music track for artist LLHEWELLYN, I went on to produce the music video for it. I began by translating the artist’s rough ideas into concrete themes, storylines, storyboards, stylistic mood boards, and finally shot sequences. I aided in fleshing out his costume, advised on his make-up application, and cut and styled his hair for the shoot. 

I directed the production functioning as both cameraman and choreographer, guiding the artist's performance for on-screen impact. Assisted by a lighting tech, I utilized a rear projector technique I developed on a previous shoot.

I wanted the artist hanging upside-down in certain shots, so I built a weight-bearing frame and harness system from which to suspend his body. I designed and built a VR visor prop as well that utilized an iPhone screen for effect.

Finally I edited the footage, which involved color grading, footage manipulation, and special fx.

KICKSTARTER VIDEO

WOLF & CROW is a two-piece music outfit based in San Francisco, CA. Their debut album ‘Folklore’ (available on Spotify) required making a crowd funding campaign. This video was the main promotional device for that campaign. It was an appeal being made to the viewer to assist these artists with their ‘dream’ of recording an album. Therefore it required visual intrigue, compelling storytelling, and an emotional connection with the subject — all concisely communicated in a 5 minute timeframe.

As one half of the membership (the “Crow”), I was not only a subject in the film short, but also the director, production manager, concept creator, choreographer, location scout, and editor.

The video was ultimately a success raising almost $2k more than the target goal.

The TJ GOURMET is a video series featuring ‘yours truly’ teaching viewers how to cook fast, simple recipes using ingredients found only at Trader Joe’s grocery stores.

In this example, I cook a beef stew in 30 minutes.

ABOUT ME

 

What does a person do who wants to DO EVERYTHING?

In my case, I divided my time into several parallel lives. I built a career in design while simultaneously pursuing music. I’d construct a web app for an online magazine or design a catalog during the day, and then work on recording an album that night. I’d roll out a new collection campaign one week and then throw a two-hundred person event that weekend.

The truth is that I’ve witnessed the skills and experience I’ve gained on each of these coexisting paths cross over and enhance my perspective, understanding and abilities in the adjacent field. It all factors in one way or another.

 

In this next leg of my career, I’d love that position where I can apply the total summation of my professional skills—all of them—those from my design life and those from each of my passion projects as well. Let’s make something great together.
